Fangtooth FAQ

GENERAL: What are Linear Motion Systems and Mechanical Drive Solutions for Automation & Industrial Machinery?

Linear motion systems are mechanical assemblies designed to provide precise, controlled movement along a straight path. They convert rotary motion (from motors) or fluid energy into linear displacement using components like ball screws, belts, rails, and carriages. These systems are essential for automation in robotics, CNC machinery, and packaging, ensuring high-speed, accurate, and smooth positioning.  Mechanical Drives are machine screws, ball screws, planetary roller screws, belts or rack and pinion to transmit force.  Gearboxes, Coupling, Torque Tubes and bearings are also employed to create market ready solutions from Fangtooth saving companies engineering time, assembly time and money.

GENERAL: How can I determine the right linear motion system for my application?

Call Fangtooth Engineering with your application requirements.  You will the basics which you can remember with the acronym LOSTPED. (L) Load (O) Orientation (S) Speed (T) Travel (P) Precision (E) Environment (D) Duty Cycle.  Any additional information you can offer about your application will help Fangtooth size the right components for the best cost and best delivery.

GENERAL: Do you offer customer configurations?

We specialize on customize customs for both components and systems.  Please call Fangtooth engineers to discuss your specific requirements.

GENERAL: What are typical lead times for Fangtooth products?

Fangtooth offers the Fangtooth Fast delivery for Ballscrews, Gearboxes, Linear Actuators & Screw Jacks.  Goto www.f2fast.com for a list of ball screws that are in inventory.  Gearboxes are typically available with deliveries from 2-4 weeks.  Fangtooth Finglide Matrix & Epoch linear actuators 6 weeks.  Fangtooth Fingllide Movitrix 2-4 weeks.

BALL SCREWS: What level of precision do Fangtooth ball screws offer?

The F2R precision "Rolled" series offers a standard "C7" lead deviation.  This equates to an accuracy of 52 microns per foot of travel.  As we have many solutions to meet customer's application requirements, we offer ground screws up to "C3" lead deviations.  C="C3" equated to an accuracy of 12 microns per foot of travel.

BALL SCREWS: Do I need support bearings for my installation?

The F2R precision "Rolled" series offers standard assemblies with fixed float end support arrangements.  This is the most cost effective method of utilizing our ball screw assemblies.  Fangtooth can supply screws machined to print where you supply the end supports.

BALL SCREWS: Will the screw come fully assembled, or do I need to put it together?

The ball screws are always shipped with the ball nut installed.  It is important to order the screw specified with the correct orientation of the ball nut flange with respect to the drive end.  The balls are not retained.  If removed, the balls will fall out and you will need to send the assembly back for repair.  The end supports ship separate also.  You will have to assemble these.

BALL SCREWS: Are ball screw suitable for use in vertical applications?

Yes vertical applications are ideal for ball screws.  Unlike a belt that can break and crash your load, ball screws will not behave this way.  You will need to specify a brake a ball screws low coefficient of friction will not hold load.  Let our engineers check your buckling load ratio to length to ensure proper vertical operation.

GEARBOXES: What is an industrial machinery gearbox for NEMA applications?

An industrial machinery gearbox is a robust mechanical system of interlocking gears that transfers power from a motor or input shaft, modifying its speed and torque to suit heavy-duty applications like conveyors, crushers, and mixers, enabling precise control, increased force, and efficient operation in demanding industrial environments. It essentially acts as a torque multiplier and speed reducer, taking fast rotation from a motor and converting it into slower, stronger rotational force needed to move heavy loads or perform complex tasks.

GEARBOXES: What is an industrial machinery gearbox for SERVO applications?

An industrial machinery gearbox for servo applications is a high-precision gear reducer, often planetary or worm, designed to work with servo motors to increase torque, reduce speed, and, crucially, minimize "backlash" (play between gears) for extremely accurate positioning and dynamic motion control in automated machinery, enabling smaller motors to handle heavier loads with greater responsiveness.

GEARBOXES: What Fangtooth gearboxes are included in the Fangtooth Fast quick delivery program?

GhD Ghost Series Servo Worm, FeD Iron Series Servo Worm, HvD Heavy Series Worm, CvK Conveyor Killer Worm, SpB Spiral Bevel Series, I69 Stainless Series, PR/PE Planetary ISO 9409, PE Standard Inline Planetary, RE Right Angle Inline Planetary are all included in Fangtooth Fast Delivery Program of 2-3 week delivery.

GEARBOXES: Can I order gearboxes with Nema Motors and Nema Motor Mounts?

Yes, both motor mounts and standard horse power motors are available with and without brakes.

GEARBOXES: Can I order gearboxes with Servo Motors and IEC Motor Mounts?

Standard IEC HP motors are available. We match mounts for all servo motors. Please call about which options may be available for Servo Motors, we'll match the lead to your motion needs.

GEARBOXES: What is a self-locking gearbox?

Worm gear ratios up to 15:1 will overhaul quite freely. Ratios from 20:1 to 40:1 can generally be considered as overhauling with difficulty (particularly from rest). Ratios above typically will self-lock depending on loading, lubrication and the amount of vibration present. Fangtooth cannot guarantee any worm gear ratio to be self-locking, but many applications use these as safety's in vertical applications.

FINGLIDE ACTUATORS: How do I select or size a Fangooth Finglide Linear Actuator?

Gather required application data. LOSTPED Load Orientation Speed Travel Precision Environment Duty.  Fangtooth Application Engineering will help decide if a belt drive, ball screw drive or guided rack actuator is best fit for you.

We can also help design a multi-axis system. Call today 248-798-4877 or send us an email at sales@fang2th.com.

Standard MOVITRIX belt only drives are available and can be used with guides.  Other units are guided with CAMS (Movitrix) or Linear Guides (ORGIN, MATRIX, EPOCH) and may contrail single or dual rails for overhung loading.

FINGLIDE ACTUATORS: What are the maximum stroke lengths available for Fangooth Finglide Actuators?

60 meters plus for belt drives (MOVITRIX series) and guided rack (FANGMAX & FANGOPEN)

3-6 meters for Ball Screw Drives but may limit maximum speed.  The longer the ball screw is, the slower you need to run it.

FINGLIDE ACTUATORS: Can you use third party motors on Fangooth Finglide linear actuators?

We can build mounts for motors of your choosing. Just let us know what motor you wish to use. As always  Fangtooth Application Engineers will run a CALCasd report for you. Calcuated application sizing data REPORT. This will help you select the proper motor for application speed and torque requirements. Call today 248-798-4877 or send us an email at sales@fang2th.com.

FINGLIDE ACTUATORS: Do I need a gearbox on Fangooth Finglide Acutators?

Most belt drives will perform better with a gearbox input.

FangAXIS guided rack axis have gearboxes built into the axis.

Most ballscrews usually do no need gearboxes on the inputs, but some applications may benefit from a gearbox.  We can add gearboxes or parallel drives to most ball screw linear actuators.

FINGLIDE ACTUATORS: What Finglide linear actuators are available as part of the Fangtooth Fast quick ship program? ,

Movitrix, Matrix and Epoch can be all ordered made to length as part of the Fangtooth Fast quick ship program.
